  169.    Egypt, situated, according to the Itinerary of Antoninus,

  171.    Daphnæ Pelusicæ.  Forster says that there is now a place
  172.    situated in the vicinity of Pelusium called Safnas, which may
  173.    be a vestige of the ancient name.  It appears to have been the
  174.    very first town in Egypt, in the road from Palestine, that
  175.    afforded tolerable accommodation for the fugitives.  It was at
  176.    this place that, according to Jerome and several of the
  177.    ancients, tradition says the faithful Jeremiah was stoned to
  178.    death by these rebellious wretches, for whose welfare he had
  179.    watched, prayed, and suffered every kind of indignity and
  180.    hardship.
